KRON

Basel based writer KRON stands for old school, stylewriting, BBoy characters, but also streetwear, tattoos and artwork, and DD12 asked him for a short interview.

I write KRON, which is a derivation of the can brand KRYLON.
I am of Spanish descent and was born in Basel/Switzerland, so I am a secondo.
I started actively spraying in 1988.

For a few years I worked as a custom painter and painted motorcycles and cars by airbrush and special paints.
At the same time, since the 90s, I always try to develop myself further. Not only graphically, but also in other ways. That's why I founded the streetwear label "HOODER INDUSTRIES" in 2000 (until 2006) and did and still do a lot of graphic work, designs and artwork for different projects as well as covers for hip hop CDs. If time allows, I also do tattoos on the side.

What's important to me about art and graffiti is staying true to yourself and not bending or stooping to gain recognition and cash!

As for my style, that's just KRON - my style: Own and different, aggressive, provocative and not for the masses. It is rebellious and full in the face. I do what I want and how I want it and you can see the influences of a Lationo Chicano Tattoo street boy. I am inspired by my surroundings, by certain situation, but also by hatred in life.

Role models? Yes, I have.

My role models, who encouraged me to paint, have been the guys in my neighborhood, who unfortunately have passed away. I admire individual artists in terms of their work or them as a person. Many are good friends.
However, I had never had role models to idolize. I've always shat on fame and just done my thing. I was often a loner, but I am in several international crews and used to travel a lot for painting. I often like to paint with good friends and am always happy to meet up again and have a good time and paint something to boot.

As for Switzerland, so the graffiti scene here is very divided, and honestly you do not interest me more because there are many dazzlers and wannabe superstars and artists sucking up. The art scene does not interest me at all. This whole urban art street art mural bullshit has a lot of phonies and ass kissers who make one on artist life and sell their ass. That's not my world, and fortunately you can't achieve that with my pictures, because they are not cute and funny and poppy pictures with comics.

Where can people see work by you?

"Everywhere. You just have to look for it. Or look on Instagram under kron_ basel
And if you want to see me, check out my status or Instagram. You can find me this year, for example, at the Dirty Dozen, which this time takes place in Schweinfurt under the motto "Schweinfurt in Colors". And otherwise, always somewhere.

As for jams, back then they were like a family to me, a family reunion where the four elements were celebrated and respected. Nowadays, there are almost no such events that I still like and feel comfortable at. It's often self-glorification, and it's all about who can show off a lot of followers and likes on social media to then be invited and respected so they can mutually benefit! I do my thing there. I don't care about all the bullshit!

Two or three words about the "Dirty Dozen":

I was taken by my colleague "JMS" for the first time. This was 2021, and I was so intrigued by the creators, the love of the cause and everything, and felt so comfortable. It was a back flash. I had extremely reunited with a lot of old friends that I hadn't seen in 20 years because I just haven't been around that much. I am very grateful that I was able to come and that JMS and the organizers made it possible. I also had a blast being able to attend again last year and agreed to draw the flyer for 2023! I will always love to come to the DD12 Jam, because I like and respect the people for what you put on the legs!

Thanks, KRON for taking the time and answer our questions!
